For a beard oil with no fragrance of any kind, it is **WhollyKaw Bare Naked** or **Viking Revolution Unscented**. For a metered pump instead of a dropper, it is Jack Black, Beardbrand, or WhollyKaw Black, Green and Red. There is no single best beard oil, and any page that names one is selling something. WhollyKaw sells five, so read this as a comparison written by a maker with the conflict of interest stated up front. What a maker can do that a magazine round-up cannot is read every ingredient list line by line, print the whole deck instead of three highlighted oils, work out the price per ounce, and say plainly when its own product is not the pick. Seven carrier oils and an essential-oil scent blend for under seven dollars an ounce. - **Fewest ingredients:** Viking Revolution Sandalwood. Jojoba, argan, sandalwood seed oil. Nothing else on the list. - **Silicone slip:** Jack Black. Cyclopentasiloxane and dimethiconol are the first two ingredients, ahead of any plant oil. The only silicone formula in the group. - **Unscented beard oil, no fragrance at all:** WhollyKaw Bare Naked (argan, jojoba, butyl avocadate, isoamyl laurate, tocopherol) or Viking Revolution Unscented (jojoba and argan). Beardbrand and Cremo were added on the strength of the AI answers: of eight Google AI answers to "best beard oil" that we sampled on 19 September 2026, Beardbrand was named in five and Honest Amish in seven. Scotch Porter, Grave Before Shave, Fable and Kuhn come up in the r/beards thread but were not on the results pages we pulled, so they are not here. We have not used the competitor oils. Nothing on this page describes how a competitor's oil feels, smells after an hour, or wears through a day, because we did not test that and would rather leave the column blank than fill it from memory. Amazon prices differ from brand-page prices, sometimes a lot: Jack Black was $9.88 on Amazon's best-seller list the day we looked and $28.00 on its own site. We used brand pages only. The columns are the ones that separate these products on the label: which oils lead the list, whether the scent is essential oil, parfum or nothing, whether there is silicone, what the bottle is, what it costs per ounce, and whether the page warns about nut allergens. Scent is a preference, so it lives in the notes, not the table. ## Notes on each brand Ordered by price per ounce where the brand prints a size; the three that do not are at the end. ### Honest Amish Classic The most-named oil in this category by a distance: GQ's overall pick, a Strategist pick, the top-voted answer in the r/beards thread, and named in seven of the eight AI answers we sampled. The deck is seven carrier oils, pumpkin seed first, then avocado, sweet almond, apricot kernel, kukui nut, argan and jojoba, scented with a long essential-oil list (cedarwood, clove bud, star anise, pink grapefruit, lavender, cinnamon leaf, peppermint and more). Dropper bottle. At $13.87 for 2 oz it is the cheapest per ounce here. Where it loses: the scent is fixed, the page prints no allergen line despite sweet almond and kukui nut in the deck, and a long essential-oil list is the opposite of what a fragrance-averse buyer wants. ### Beardbrand Tree Ranger Jojoba leads, then abyssinian, babassu and castor, then parfum and a grapefruit seed extract. No argan at all, the only deck here without it. The page states no SLS, SLES, parabens, silicones or phthalates, and says the Utility Oil and Beard Oil have always shared the same formula. $29.00 for 1.7 oz or $39.00 for 4 oz, so the 4 oz bottle is the second-cheapest per ounce in the table at $9.75. Pump dispenser. Where it loses: the 1.7 oz price is high, and the collection page's "no known DHT-inhibiting ingredients" line is a marketing claim, not something an ingredient list can demonstrate. ### Mad Viking Kalla Sweet almond, jojoba, argan, abyssinian, grapeseed and tocopherol (vitamin E); the almond, jojoba, argan and grapeseed are listed as cold pressed. 2 oz for $22.00, $11.00 per ounce. The scent is not itemised in the deck. Where it loses: no dispenser stated, no allergen line despite sweet almond leading the list, and the collection page's itch and dandruff language. ### WhollyKaw beard oils: two formulas, not one WhollyKaw makes five beard oils on two formulas. This page used to say they shared one base; they do not, and the correction is dated at the foot of the page. WhollyKaw **Black, Green and Red** ($23.99, 50 ml pump) are a plant-oil formula: sweet almond, castor, grapeseed and olive lead, then virgin organic argan, rice bran extract, shea butter ethyl esters, castor oil propanediol esters, hops extract, parfum, rosemary and sunflower extracts, and tocopherols. No jojoba. The page labels them vegan and states no alcohol, parabens, silicone or gluten, so this is a silicone-free beard oil in the plain sense, and it warns that the oil contains sweet almond (tree nut) and sesame. The three differ only in scent: [Black](/products/beard-oil-black-with-virgin-organic-argan-oil) is oud, cedarwood, vanilla and cashmeran; [Green](/products/beard-oil-green-with-virgin-organic-argan-oil) is tobacco, oud, vanilla and amber; [Red](/products/beard-oil-red-virgin-organic-argan-oil) is rum, vanilla, tobacco and cinnamon. Green is not a mild everyday scent, whatever this page used to say. WhollyKaw **Bare Naked Unscented Beard Oil and Cedar-Santal** ($25.99 and $27.99, 30 ml) are an ester formula: butyl avocadate and isoamyl laurate first, then organic argan, organic jojoba and tocopherol. Butyl avocadate is an ester made from avocado oil; isoamyl laurate is the ingredient the page describes as an Ecocert-approved alternative to silicone. We lead with the esters on purpose. The design goal on the label is spreadability and lower combing force with no tack or build-up, and esters get there without silicone, which is the same job Jack Black gives to cyclopentasiloxane. [Bare Naked](/products/bare-naked-beard-oil) has no essential oils and no fragrance. [Cedar-Santal](/products/beard-oil-cedar-santal) adds cedarwood and sandalwood and is built to sit next to our [cedarwood](/learn/cedarwood-shaving-soap) and [sandalwood](/learn/best-sandalwood-shaving-soap) shave soaps rather than fight them. ### Badass Beard Care Havana Haze Apricot kernel, argan, jojoba, tocopherol (vitamin E), rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree, and essential and/or fragrance oils. 1 oz dropper bottle, $16.14 on sale against a regular $18.99. The page scales the dose to beard length: three to six drops per inch. Where it loses: eucalyptus and tea tree in a face product are a choice, and the scent source is "essential and/or fragrance oils", which does not tell you which. ### Jack Black Beard Oil The formula is built differently from everything else in the table. Cyclopentasiloxane and dimethiconol, both silicones, are the first two ingredients, and grapeseed is the first plant oil, seventh on the list, after an olive-derived ester, jojoba esters, an alkyl benzoate and olive unsaponifiables. Argan, olive, jojoba, rice bran, shea, watermelon, marula, baobab and mongongo oils follow. The page cites Circana 2022 data for a "#1 beard oil" claim in US prestige beauty. It costs $28.00 for 1 oz, the highest per-ounce price in the group, and the page says to pump two to three drops into the palm. Where it loses: price, and the silicone-first deck if you are shopping for a plant-oil product. Where it wins: if you want the feel silicones give, this is the only formula in the group that has them. ### Cremo No. 18 Palo Santo Sunflower, avocado, jojoba, argan, coconut, fragrance, soybean, rosemary extract, sunflower glycerides, tocopherol. Dropper. $11.99, and the product page does not print a size, so no per-ounce figure. Where it loses: coconut oil sits fifth in the deck, which some readers avoid on their face; and the page claims the oil "restores natural moisture", which is the kind of line we would not print. ### Viking Revolution Sandalwood Amazon's number-one seller in beard conditioners and oils on the day we looked. The whole deck is jojoba, argan and sandalwood seed oil. The unscented version drops the sandalwood and is jojoba and argan only. $9.99; the single-oil page does not print a size (the brand's kit listings say 1 fl oz, so we have left the per-ounce cell blank rather than borrow from another page). Where it loses: a three-ingredient oil is the simplest thing you can buy and also the least engineered; no esters, no antioxidant, no allergen line, no stated size, no stated dispenser. ### Live Bearded Barbershop Meadowfoam, avocado, evening primrose, argan, jojoba and natural fragrance. $20.00, size not stated. Meadowfoam seed oil leading the list is unusual in this group. Where it loses: no size on the page, no dispenser stated, and a product page that promises to eliminate dryness and itch, which is more than a cosmetic label can support. ## Where WhollyKaw is not the pick If you want the cheapest ounce, that is Honest Amish at $6.94, Beardbrand's 4 oz bottle at $9.75, or Mad Viking at $11.00. WhollyKaw Black, Green and Red are $14.20 an ounce and Bare Naked and Cedar-Santal are $25.73 and $27.71, so on a long beard that empties a bottle a month, those three cost roughly half to three-quarters as much as Black, Green or Red over a year, and a quarter to a half as much as Bare Naked or Cedar-Santal. If you want to choose from ten scents at one price, that is Viking Revolution, nine scents plus an unscented oil at $9.99. We make four scented oils and one unscented. If you want to buy on Amazon today, Honest Amish, Viking Revolution, Cremo and Jack Black were all on its beard-oil best-seller list the day we looked. Ours are sold direct on whollykaw.mom. If you want a formula with no silicone and no fragrance of any kind, an ester base that spreads without tack, a pump-dosed plant-oil formula, or an allergen line printed on the product page, that is WhollyKaw. ## Beard oil ingredients: what is in the bottle Beard oil ingredients are carrier oils plus, optionally, a scent. Carriers are the bulk of the bottle and appear first on the ingredient list, which is why the table shows the first three in label order rather than a brand's "key ingredients" box. Argan (Argania spinosa kernel oil) and jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, a liquid wax ester rather than a triglyceride oil) are the two that appear across most of these decks; sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, grapeseed and castor make up the rest. Castor is the thickest of these carriers and shows up where a brand wants more body. Jack Black uses silicones (cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol). WhollyKaw Bare Naked and Cedar-Santal use plant-derived esters (butyl avocadate, isoamyl laurate) for the same low-tack, fast-spreading feel without silicone. The other seven brands list no silicone and no ester ahead of the carriers. Tocopherol (vitamin E) appears in most of these decks; on our Black, Green and Red label it is there to protect the oil from oxidation, not as an active, and the same label attributes shine to plant esters with a high refractive index. Scent is the third layer, and the label tells you which kind. "Essential oil" names (cedarwood, clove, sandalwood seed) mean botanical extracts; "parfum" or "fragrance" means a blend that is not itemised; "natural fragrance" names a source but not the components. Honest Amish and Viking are essential-oil scented; Beardbrand, Cremo, Live Bearded and WhollyKaw Black, Green and Red use parfum or fragrance; Badass says "essential and/or fragrance oils", which is not itemised either way. Two of the products compared pass it. WhollyKaw Bare Naked is argan, jojoba, butyl avocadate, isoamyl laurate and tocopherol. Viking Revolution Unscented is jojoba and argan. Honest Amish is essential-oil scented, which is not the same thing; Badass Beard Care's "essential and/or fragrance oils" and Cremo's "fragrance" line rule both out. If you wear a cologne or react to fragrance, these are the two to look at. ## Beard oil price per ounce: which is cheapest, plus size and dose Ranked by price per ounce, for the products with a size printed on the brand's page: 1. Jack Black, $28.00 Cremo, Live Bearded and Viking Revolution do not print a size on the pages we read, so they are not ranked. A pump gives a metered dose; a dropper gives you drops to count. Three brands here print a dose that scales with the beard. Badass Beard Care says three to six drops per inch. Jack Black's page says two to three drops from its pump. Our Black, Green and Red pages say one pump for stubble or a short beard and two for a full beard; Bare Naked and Cedar-Santal say two to three drops for a short beard, four to six for a full one, more for a long one. The other five pages give no count. Beard oil price per ounce matters more the longer the beard. A short beard using three drops a day will take months to finish a 1 oz bottle, so even the $28 Jack Black works out to a few dollars a month. A long beard using a pump or two a day empties a 1.69 oz bottle in weeks, and at that point Honest Amish at $6.94 an ounce or Beardbrand's 4 oz at $9.75 is the cheaper habit by a wide margin. What they do and do not do Beard oil conditions hair, softens it, adds shine and makes it easier to comb. Our own product page puts it as reducing combing force without build-up, and that is the whole job. The FDA draws the line by intended use: a product "intended to cleanse, beautify, promote attractiveness, or alter the appearance" is a cosmetic; one intended to affect the structure or function of the body is a drug. It does not grow hair, thicken hair, fill a patchy beard, or treat an itchy or flaking face, and no ingredient list on this page contains anything that would let a brand claim otherwise. All thirteen products here are cosmetics under US law, which means none has been evaluated by the FDA for any health effect and none may legally claim one. You will see growth, itch and dandruff language on several of the competitor pages above, in the Amazon listings, and in the AI answers. Read it as marketing. Beardbrand's "no known DHT-inhibiting ingredients" line belongs to the same genre, a claim about what the oil does not do to a hormone, and an ingredient list cannot demonstrate that either way. No beard oil grows hair or thickens it, and no ingredient in any deck on this page does either. A product that changes hair growth is a drug, not a cosmetic, and would be labelled and regulated as one. If patchiness is the concern, a dermatologist is the right call; an oil will make the beard you have softer and shinier, which is all it can do. ## Oil, balm or butter Oil is carriers and scent, nothing else, so it conditions and adds shine but gives no hold. Balm adds beeswax or a plant wax and butters, so it holds shape and sits heavier. Butter is the same idea without the wax. If you want softening and shine on a short or medium beard, oil is the simpler product; for shaping a long beard, a balm does what oil cannot. Honest Amish is the most-recommended by reviewers, Reddit and AI answers, and the cheapest per ounce at $6.94. Jack Black is the only silicone-based formula and the most expensive per ounce at $28. Viking Revolution has the shortest ingredient list at three. WhollyKaw makes two formulas: a plant-oil pump (Black, Green, Red) and an ester-based unscented or cedar-sandalwood oil (Bare Naked, Cedar-Santal). For conditioning, softening, shine and easier combing, yes; that is what carrier oils do to hair. For growth, thickness, itch or dandruff, no. Every product on this page is a cosmetic, none has been evaluated by the FDA for any health effect, and none of the ingredient lists on this page contains anything that supports a growth or treatment claim. Brand pages that say otherwise are marketing. ### What is the best beard oil for growth and thickness? None. No beard oil grows hair or thickens it, and no ingredient in any deck on this page does either.
